Rockstar says GTA 6 Online is a “closely guarded secret” as 32-player details

Rockstar Games has described details about GTA 6’s online mode as one of its most closely guarded secrets, revealing that employees discussed support for 32 players.

The information emerged in a statement submitted to an employment tribunal in Edinburgh, where 31 former Rockstar employees are challenging their dismissals.

According to the filing, workers referenced features for a confidential project in a private Discord server, including “an online 32 player format.”

Rockstar claimed that game features were among “the most closely guarded secrets of the company,” adding that one staff member found the discussion “extraordinarily alarming.”

The wording does not confirm that GTA 6 Online will be limited to 32 players when it launches. It only states that a 32-player format was being discussed and was highly confidential at the time.

Not much else is known about GTA 6's Online Mode. However, one former Rockstar dev believes GTA 6 Online could eventually let players create and monetize their own stories through roleplay.

Bloomberg reporter Jason Schreier also stated that Rockstar has no plans to discuss what GTA 6’s Online mode will look like anytime soon.

Rockstar also compared its efforts to protect GTA 6 information to some of the most famously secretive companies in the world.

“Guarding the secrets of the unique gameplay and design are akin to Apple protecting the iPhone or Coke protecting its formula,” the statement reads.

The studio said all visitors must sign NDAs, contractors are escorted by security, remote work is heavily restricted and external storage devices are banned. Photography is also forbidden, while personal phones, tablets and laptops cannot connect to Rockstar systems.

Rockstar reportedly employs five full-time investigators and a director to monitor potential leaks. The company also installed privacy film on its office windows after drones were allegedly used to photograph inside its buildings.

The statement referenced the massive 2022 GTA 6 breach, which it said began with a phishing attack that gave a hacker access to an employee’s computer and internal Slack channels.

Rockstar has faced several further leaks since then. The company previously indicated that an employee was fired after allegedly sharing information later posted by established leaker GameRoll, adding credibility to major leaked gameplay details.

GameRoll’s claims included enterable malls, vehicle-based weapon storage and five story chapters.

Additional “top secret” information later surfaced in Rockstar court documents, while gameplay, map and radio footage leaked shortly before the game’s extended reveal.
